Introduction
I am working to raise awareness of the changes we need to make in our medical and health system and our communities in order to address the problem known as Peak Oil - the reduced availability and rising costs of oil and gas.
Modern health care is dependent on sophisticated computer technology and expensive diagnostic machinery that require large inputs of energy derived from carbon-based fossil fuels. Our health systems are further dependent on a wide range of products such as pharmaceuticals, all of which derive from petroleum.
Oil and gas are predicted to become increasingly expensive and scarce in the near future, and the critical question is: what does this mean for our health and medical systems and how can we prepare?
We need to be asking this question, so that we can start to make the changes to improve our medical and healthcare systems before the reality of oil depletion strikes our communities.
I am currently working on a book on this topic, to be published in 2007, and am available for speaking engagements and presentations. Please contact me pamelagray@transition-health.com for more details.
Dr. Pamela Gray is a well respected scientist and award-winning entrepreneur who has enjoyed a highly varied career working in the UK and the US. Having started her working life as a theoretical physicist, for the past 4 years she has focused her research exclusively on understanding the factors that affect human health and what these imply for the design and management of our health and medical systems. She is a strong advocate for an approach that integrates the best of conventional medicine with that of complementary and alternative techniques, and is deeply concerned of the need to address Peak Oil.
